Dataset - Southern Ocean Dissolved Iron (Fe) Data from Flow Injection Analysis
Dissolved iron was measured directly on board by Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) after De Jong et al. 1998 in a cleanroom container. In a continuous FIA system the acidified pH 1.8, filtered (0.2µm) seawater is buffered to pH 4.0. The iron is concentrated on a column which contains the column material aminodiacetid acid (IDA). This material binds only transition metals and not the interfering salts. After washing of the column with ultra pure water (MQ) the column is eluted with diluted acid. After mixing with luminol, peroxide and ammonium the oxidation of luminal with peroxide is catalysed by iron and a blue light is produced and detected with a photon counter. The amount of iron is calculated using a standard calibration line, where a known amount of iron is added to low iron containing seawater. Using this calibration line a number of counts per nM iron is obtained. A total of 924 samples, divided over 41 stations and a surface transect is measured. All 23 stations on the prime meridian have been analyzed on board. The stations in the Weddell Sea (8) and Drake Passage (10)., where analyzed at the NIOZ clean room facilities. The values of DFe measured varied from below 50 pM in the surface waters up to more then 2 nM. The standard deviation varied between 0% and 7% (exceptional), but was generally lower than 5%. The standard deviation of the values is determined of a triplicate measurement of the same sample bottle. To correct for contamination during the process or in the sample bottle a duplicate sample was taken of every station depth. The intra-daily consistency of the system was verified using a drift standard. Regularly a certified SAFe standard (Johnson et al. 2007) for the long term consistency and absolute accuracy was measured.

To check the consistency of our data with the community, the certification samples collected on the American SAFe cruise (Johnson et al., 2007) were analysed in triplicate for Fe. The resulting concentrations of Fe for both SAFe Surface (S) and SAFe deep (D2) from 1000 m, agreed very nicely the community consensus value published by Johnsons et al. in 2007. We obtained an average concentration of 1.01 +/- 0.034 nM (n=26) and 0.97 +/- 0.07 nM (n=20) for SAFe S and D2 respectively. The dataset was scanned for obvious outliers (due to contamination during sample handling or measurement) and these have been quality flagged with the number 4 (5% of the total dataset). Some samples gave anomalous nutrient results for the intended depth and were assumed to have been closed at the wrong depth and quality flagged with the number 8 (2% of the total dataset). All other values are assumed to be correct and flagged with the number 0.
